Individual Support Services
The Arc helps people gain a sense of independence by enabling them to decide how and where they live, work and socialize. Our staff provides the individuals we serve with the specific daily supports they require. This support encourages individuals to participate in the world around them and creates a sense of empowerment over their lives.
Imagine not having the right to decide what color to paint your bedroom. When Jennifer, 48, lived in an institution, she wasn’t allowed to make decisions as simple as this one. “They didn’t think I could make my own decisions because I have a disability. I felt like I didn’t matter.”
“When I met the individuals at The Arc, the first thing they asked me was what color I wanted my room to be! I knew I would like it there. They treat me like a person. I even decide what I want to buy at the grocery store! I am happy.”
Jennifer celebrates her independence on a daily basis because of the individual support services The Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region provides. It is up to her to decide what church she wants to attend and what she wants to do on the weekends.
Since we became involved with Jennifer, she lives independently in her own apartment with daily drop-in services, loves her job and even pays taxes! The Arc has given Jennifer her voice back, and she is flourishing!
