What is a developmental disability?
An individual who has a developmental disability has mental and/or physical impairments that begin before adulthood (the age of 22.) These impairments affect daily functioning in three or more of the following areas:
- ability to live independently
- economic self-sufficiency
- learning
- mobility
- receptive and expressive language
- self-care
- self-direction
What are some types of developmental disabilities that The Arc Supports?
We support many individuals with disabilities who may have one or more of the following:
Autism, Down Syndrome, Asberger Syndrome, Traumatic Brain Injury and head traumas, Spina Bifida, Impulse Control Disorder, Menkes, Pervasive Developmental Disorder, visual impairment, hearing impairment, speech impairment, anxiety disorder, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Smith-Magenis syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Multiple Sclerosis, Muscular Dystrophy, Epilepsy, Borderline Personality Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bi-Polar disorder, Cystic Fibrosis as well as undiagnosed disorders and disabilities.
