Do I Really Need a Guardian? Wednesday, February 11, 2009
6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Location:  Woods Memorial Church

Presenter:  Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum

Should I have a guardian?”  This is a question that often arises for persons with developmental disabilities.  In particular, many parents feel that they must establish guardianship to ensure adequate care for their family member after he or she reaches a particular age.  In many cases, well-meaning actions by family members can lead to unimagined consequences for other family members in the future.  Each family should explore the pros and cons regarding guardianship.

Join us in learning the truths and myths about guardianship.

New Directions is the latest waiver services program administered by the Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA).  New Directions provides for a consumer-directed system rather than a traditional service provider driven system.  This program provides an exciting opportunity for individuals with developmental disabilities to be supported in different, innovative and creative ways.  Individuals and their families have increased power and control over planning, budgeting, expending and managing service dollars.

Are There Any Employment Options? Tuesday, April 14, 2009
6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

Location:  Woods Memorial Church

Presenters:  Rick Callahan, The Arc of Central Chesapeake Region

Veronica Lloyd, Opportunity Builders, Inc.

Representative, Division of Rehabilitation Services

The Arc of Central Chesapeake Region and Opportunity Builders, Inc. (OBI) offers Micro-Enterprise, self-employment for people with disabilities. The Arc along with OBI are involved in Project Income, a collaboration with residential and employment providers from Anne Arundel County and Howard County.  The program seeks new methods and techniques to address the overwhelming unemployment and under-employment issues that effect people with developmental disabilities.  This group is exploring person-centered alternative employment strategies for individuals for whom traditional employment options have been unsuccessful.

The RISE Program is an initiative of the Division of Rehabilitation Services.  The program’s mission is to present self-employment as a vocational option to individuals with significant disabilities who are eligible to receive DORS services.  Supported Business Enterprise is an option for DORS eligible individuals with significant disabilities who will require on-going supports to perform the functions of and operate businesses.

Join us in a discussion about employment options.
