Employers
Many individuals with developmental disabilities in central chesapeake region have expressed a desire for day and employment services that complement their abilities, align with their personal interests, and enable them to participate in the natural life of the community. The staff at The Arc of the Central Chesapeake Region Employment Service respects and honors these desires by promoting the individual’s interests and participation in their community through customized employment or community inclusion activities. We believe that the key to a successful employment/income partnership with the business community is through community connections. These connections lead to relationships that enable individuals to find employment or start his/her own micro-enterprise.
Armed with the strong belief that all individuals, regardless of disability, deserve to be successful in their personal and professional lives, The Arc provided supports to John, a 41 year-old who has autism, so that he could start a micro-enterprise that builds on his passion for the earth and the need for all people to recycle. Prior to his micro-enterprise, John worked in a sheltered workshop, performing tasks that provided no benefit to him, or the community. Now, he is enjoying each day shredding personal documents for doctor’s offices, law offices, and collecting recyclables from area businesses.
The Arc’s employment program currently supports 18 individuals with their career goals, and has helped 11 employers fill critical positions. The Department of Labor defines customized employment as “individualizing the relationship between job seekers and employers in ways that meet the needs of both. It is based on an individualized determination of the strengths, requirements and interests of a person with a complex life. When a customized relationship is developed, a shared employment alliance results.”
